Tough Enough is wrapping up, I'll have my full thoughts on the show tomorrow, but Matt Cross got the boot tonight for not seizing the moment and not showcasing what a nine-year veteran could do. Talk about blowing a once in a lifetime opportunity.
But Raw is on right now and I am live blogging! Refresh your page for ongoing coverage of tonight's show and check out the Twitter feed for ongoing absurdity. Lot of rumors swirling about this show, so it could be a very talked-about Monday Night Raw.
Kicking things off with one half of the next year's WrestleMania event, John Cena! In case you've been living under a rock for the last seven days, he'll be taking on The Rock in 356 days at WrestleMania 28. Cena drops a bombshell, for it to be the biggest match in WWE history, Cena vs. The Rock has to be for the WWE Championship! Cena lays down the challenge to The Miz, but gets Randy Orton instead... oh god, no! Orton in the title scene? AHHHH! Another John Cena vs. Randy Orton match?! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankfully, John Morrison breaks up this unfolding tragedy, and even though I don't know how he has any claim to the WWE Championship, but I'll allow it if it means no Cena vs. Orton. But hey, Vickie Guerrero & Dolph Ziggler are here and if anyone in the ring deserves a shot at the WWE Championship, it's Dolphy Z. Hey, he never got a rematch when he lost the World Heavyweight Championship!
What the hell, now R-Truth wants a shot? Dude, you weren't even at WrestleMania, you haven't been on TV in like a month! He says he's never received a title shot, which is true, but neither has Hornswoggle, doesn't mean he deserves one!
The G?M announces a Gauntlet Challenge tonight with all five guys and the Superstar that goes the distance will face The Miz at Extreme Rules. Fun opener, very Attitude Era of them, but I miss the days when half the roster would spill out into the ring for the first segment of the evening.
Teasing an Edge retirement? What the hell is up with this?
OMG, a vignette for Awesome Kong! She flicked the head off a Bratz doll, which was simultaneously creepy and cool. Can't wait to see her plow through the Divas.
Eve vs. Brie Bella (I think) for the Divas Championship and Eve actually has the brilliant idea to mark an "X" on Nikki's hand so they can't use the switcheroo to steal the title... which they do anyway. Well, that was pointless, wasn't it Eve? Brie Bella is Diva's Champion and Nikki is now in the Straight Edge Society.
Sin Cara makes his in-ring debut tonight against Primo and already this guy is blowing my mind. Backflipping off Primo's shoulders, slingshot hurricanrana to the outside of the ring, beautiful sunset flip powerbomb, this is crazy. Unfortunately, both guys slipped a bit on the top rope, they re-did it so Sin Cara could hit his finisher, a C4 (flipping Rock Bottom) from the top rope, which was gorgeous when he hit it, but I guarantee that won't be his finisher for long. Moves like that can blow a finish, take too long to set up and are a little too unbelievable. It's why Mr. Kennedy stopped doing the Green Bay Plunge and it's why CM Punk should NOT do the Pepsi Plunge, there are just too many things that can go wrong. Nice as an "every once in awhile thing," like the Van Terminator, but shouldn't be used every match. Enjoyed this match though, Primo looked great too, but unfortunately, all anyone will talk about is the screwy finish.
Looks like there's some trouble within The Corre, but before things get too heated, Santino Marella, Daniel Bryan, Evan Bourne & Mark Henry interrupt, announcing that they are "APPLE: Allied People Powered by Loathing Everything (That You Stand For)!" Although whoever loses this match, their team will be known as "J.O.B. Squad 2.0."
APPLE vs. The Corre is our next match and I think if you pulled some guys from both corners together, you could have a really cool group. How about Justin Gabriel, Daniel Bryan and Evan Bourne as a team? I'd dig that. Absolute bedlam in the ring with the good guys hitting some big high-flying moves, but before Santino can hit the Cobra, Justin Gabriel hits him from behind, allowing Slater to hit Sweetness for the win. Fun little match and it helps reestablish The Corre, but I still don't see any direction for the group.
Hey JR is here and he's destroying the Cole Mine! Jerry Lawler vs. Jack Swagger is next and if Lawler wins, he gets another match against Michael Cole, but if Swagger wins, Cole retires undefeated. Cole and JR are amusing as corner men here, match isn't much to write home about, but you'd think Lawler just won the WWE Title with the pop he got when he rolled up Swagger. Cole berates Swagger after the match and slaps him in the face, so King decides to make it a tag match at Extreme Rules, him and JR vs. Cole and Swagger. Well that's not really a stipulation, is it? Can't we make it for Cole's commentary spot? JR and King win, JR gets his spot back? Please?!
Slick little video package with WWE Superstars and Legends talking about Triple H vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania. They need to do more stuff like this, it really pushes the stories to the next level.
Lots of speculation about Edge tonight, he's out to make his announcement. Edge admits that he knew ever since he had spinal fusion surgery back in 2004, he was wrestling on borrowed time. Edge got some tests done recently and he just flat out says he has to retire. Wow. Talk about being kicked in the gut, I thought they were screwing with us, but it looks like this is legit and that's damn sad. Edge getting choked up is incredibly tough to watch but he's not going to end up in a wheelchair and he gets to retire as World Heavyweight Champion. Edge has won more titles than anyone in the history of the company, he's held more WWE/World Titles than anyone outside of Triple H, I believe and for the very little that it's worth, he was voted by you as Kick-Out's Superstar of the Decade! I'll have more thoughts on this very soon but holy shit, I was not prepared for this news at all and really have to process it. Seriously heartbreaking news, but enjoy that ice cream tonight, Edge!
Back from commercial, Edge walked through the Gorilla Position to the roster lined up, giving him a standing ovation. Dammit WWE, stop reminding me that I am not emotionally dead inside!
But as they say, the show must go on and it's Main Event time! Round one of the Gauntlet Challenge is Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler. Eh, I really don't want to see Orton lingering around, but there's not much point in teasing Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz when we all know that ain't gonna happen. And you know what makes every Randy Orton match better? The Miz on commentary! Oh look, New Nexus has returned and they distract Orton long enough for Ziggler to get the pin! I'll be over here eating some crow and doing a happy dance while they assault Orton.
R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler is next, decent little match between the two, pretty much what you'd expect from a Truth vs. Ziggler match on Raw, but Truth manages to pick up the win and he takes on his former tag team partner next!
R-Truth vs. John Morrison in Round 3 and why do I have the feeling no one is going to last more than one round in this thing? Once again, I'm wrong, Morrison misses Starship Pain and Truth hits What's Up to win his second match. Well, one thing I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong about is that we're guaranteed a Cena/Miz rematch at Extreme Rules!
John Cena vs. R-Truth is the final match in the Gauntlet Challenge and thanks for playing, Ronald Truthenstein Esq.! I like R-Truth, seriously, I do, but I can't help but think this match would actually mean something if Truth had been on TV in the last two months. The crowd's into it though, this crowd has been awesome all night, so maybe they're going for some kind of star-making performance here? Although if Cena doesn't win here, what the hell is he going to do at Extreme Rules? No one would bat an eye if Truth wasn't on the show, no one batted an eye when he was off WrestleMania.
Much to the chagrin of the IWC, this match is actually really fun and I'm seriously believing Truth has a chance of winning this thing. What the hell is wrong with me? The Miz isn't amused by this though and simply runs into the ring and kicks both guy's asses. They're both losers! Neither of them get a shot, get to the back of the line!
But The G?M begs to differ and makes it a Triple Threat match at Extreme Rules?! Really? R-Truth is seriously going to be in a main event of a PPV and it's not as the sixth man in an Elimination Chamber? Odd. I'm honestly not opposed to it, but it is really odd. Hey, fresh face in a main event though, at least there's that.
Excellent Raw. When's the last time there was this much wrestling on Raw? Not bad for the company that dropped "wrestling" from their name, right? Edge retiring is heartbreaking though and I think even with a Monday night jammed packed with actual wrestling matches, we won't be talking about any of them tomorrow.
