Match of the Month - January 2011

If I had to describe the wrestling in January of 2011 in one word, it would be "solid." There wasn't a lot of blow-your-mind, "THIS IS AWESOME!" stuff last month, but I wouldn't complain if we got matches like these at least once a week on Raw and Smackdown. First, the runners-up:

5. Kofi Kingston & Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio & Kane - Smackdown 1/25
Perhaps I'm a bit biased since I was there, but I really enjoyed this match. Rey Rey and Kofi made a fun tag team and Alberto Del Rio showed us why he deserved to win the Rumble two days later. Nothing revolutionary, just a rock solid tag match to hype an upcoming PPV.

4. Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler - Royal Rumble 1/27
The World Heavyweight Title match opened last Sunday's PPV and accomplished exactly what an opening contest should, set the tone for the evening and get the crowd on their feet. The near falls alone earned this match a spot on the list, but Edge digging deep into his bag of tricks and Dolph Ziggler convincing us that he just might steal the World Title pushed it over the top.

3. CM Punk vs. John Cena - Raw 1/17
When this match happened, I was convinced that Cena vs. Punk was going down at WrestleMania and I couldn't believe how much these two gave away in the main event of Monday Night Raw. Now it looks like Cena will be working with The Miz and Punk with Orton, but after this match, I definitely wanted to see more Punk vs. Cena. Imagine what these two would do in front of 60,000+ at WrestleMania with a definitive ending! This match didn't get a spot in the top two though because of the DQ finish, but it gets the #3 spot because it brought us BEARDTISTA~!

2. Tyson Kidd vs. Yoshi Tatsu - Superstars 1/20
What is this "Superstars" Razor is talking about? You may not know this, they certainly would never tell you about it, but WWE has this show on Thursday nights where guys like Tyson Kidd and Yoshi Tatsu get to wrestle. This may sound like a strange concept to people that are used to seeing Tyson Kidd get demolished by Mark Henry in 45 seconds on Raw, or people who forgot that Yoshi Tatsu exists, but it's true! This magical, far away place is real and it's called "WGN America." I had forgotten all about it myself until our buddies at Wrestlespective encouraged me to check it out... good thing I did, because it was the second-best match last month.

But there can be only one Match of the Month...

1. John Morrison vs. The Miz - Raw 1/3
The first televised WWE match of 2011 saw The Miz defend his WWE Championship against his former tag team partner, John Morrison, in a falls count anywhere match. This match probably should've happened at the Royal Rumble PPV, but then we wouldn't have got Morrison's Spectacular Spider-Man skills and we wouldn't have got such a memorable first match of the year. Morrison dove off the giant WWE logo on the stage, nailed Alex Riley with a NASTY! flying knee on the barricade, and fell through a table after missing Starship Pain... outside the ring! My jaw was on the floor after this one, and there's no arguing that this was January's best match. Now get serious about John Morrison, WWE!
