WWE SummerSlam 2010 Predictions

Apologies to my friends over at EWB, I forgot to post the prediction contest earlier in the week and the board's been down all weekend. For those of you that still want to get your prediction fix in though, just leave a comment with your predictions on this post. Also, I'll be creating an open thread here on Kick-Out!! later tonight that everyone can use for live, ongoing discussion of the PPV. You don't have to be a blogger member to leave a comment, you post under a Name/URL without registering. Everyone's welcome to join in on the discussion, especially members of the Tweepulation, I know sometimes 140 characters just isn't enough to get a point across. I should be posting that around 7pm est, so spread the word.

Alright, the 23rd annual SummerSlam is tonight, you can get a brief history lesson in the PPV by checking out the Top 23 Matches in SummerSlam History, and maybe this time next year, some matches tonight will make the list. Not sure what to make of this PPV right now though, the card looks like the definition of underwhelming, but with WWE taking a massive risk like putting seven completely untested rookies in the main event of the second biggest show of the year, I can't help but feel like they have something up their sleeve. Let's take a look at the card.

7-on-7 Elimination Tag
Team WWE: John Cena, Chris Jericho, Edge, John Morrison, R-Truth, Bret Hart & ???
The Nexus: Wade Barrett, Michael Tarver, Skip Sheffield, David Otunga, Darren Young, Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater

Lots of speculation surrounding this one. I've heard everything from Triple H being revealed as the leader of Nexus to Daniel Bryan coming back to join Team WWE. I certainly believe WWE has some sort of surprise in store for this one, but whatever it is, we're just going to have to wait and see. Personally? As long as Vince McMahon doesn't come out and say "IT WAS ME ALL ALONG!" I'll be happy. I expect the match itself to be... interesting. Obviously the Rookies are untested in a big match situation like this, but with the staggering amount of talent on the opposite side of the ring, I think they'll be okay. Nexus absolutely has to win this match though. It doesn't matter what underhanded tactics they use, but this is a must-win situation for these guys if they want this storyline to continue.

WWE Championship
Sheamus © vs. Randy Orton

I liked their interaction on Monday, they were the lone highlight of Raw aside from the ending, so it got me pretty excited for this match. They were limited in their encounter earlier in this year at the Royal Rumble since they were both heels and it was really just an excuse for Legacy in-fighting, so I expect a much more enjoyable match tonight. Still, Sheamus vs. Randy Orton doesn't exactly strike me as a SummerSlam main event, as much as I love Sheamus, he's still very new at the top. Crowd should be hot for it though, Orton's on fire lately and the crowd loves to hate the Celtic Warrior, so this could be a sleeper hit. I'll say Sheamus retains, but I'm not very confident in that pick.

World Heavyweight Championship
Kane © vs. Rey Mysterio

I'm not looking forward to this match, especially after the feud that never ended in 2008, but surely The Undertaker returns here, right? Kane will win, but just as he goes to put Rey Mysterio in the casket, he opens the lid to find The Phenom, who goes berserk on the Big Red Machine.

Intercontinental Championship
Dolph Ziggler © vs. Kofi Kingston

If they give these two enough time, we could have a really enjoyable match on our hands. Dolph Ziggler just won the belt, the belt he spent the better part of a year chasing, so there's no way he gives it up here. Dolph Ziggler retains, Kofi Kingston hopefully moves on to bigger and better things.

3-on-1 Handicap Match
CM Punk, Luke Gallows & Joey Mercury vs. Big Show

Don't expect a mat classic here, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this was more of a comedy segment than a match, but at least the injured CM Punk gets something to do at SummerSlam. I'll predict Big Show to win after the SES gets tired of Punk badmouthing them. Hopefully it doesn't lead to break-up or anything, but it should lead to some comic relief.

Diva's Championship
Alicia Fox © vs. Melina

For the sake of wrestling fans around the world, please let Melina win here. Whoever wins, expect this one to be bowling shoe ugly.

Grudge Match
The State of California vs. Tiffany

Tiffany fought The Law and The Law won.

Alright, please make your predictions in the comments section. Again, EWB folks who want to participate in the prediction contest, please do so here. And remember, be back here at 7pm est. for a live discussion thread for WWE SummerSlam, and my full review of the show will be posted later this evening!

  1. 1) The Nexus
    2) Sheamus
    3) Kane
    4) Big Show
    5) Melina

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  2. Nexus
    Orton via DQ
    Big Show

I also predict an impromptu Tag Title match won by Hawkins and Archer. >_>
