Champion of Champions - Slammin' 16 North

Before we move on to the next batch of matches, let's take a look at the results from the previous round:

Shawn Michaels (65%) d. Hulk Hogan (35%)
The Rock (57%) d. Bret Hart (43%)

Well, I have to say I disagree with both of those. I love Shawn Michaels, I would even argue that he's one of the greatest in history, but Hulk Hogan is Hulk Hogan. Aside from Stone Cold, he's the most recognizable name in the history of the industry, so I'm pretty shocked that he lost here. Perhaps his TNA run has tarnished his legacy amongst Kick-Out readers? The Rock over Bret Hart is perplexing as well, while he is far more recognizable, his WWE Title reigns were basically a game of Vince Russo hot potato.

But the votes are final and here's what the bracket looks like:

We're heading North for our next round, so your matches to vote on are:

Bruno Sammartino vs. Chris Jericho
The Undertaker vs. Bob Backlund

Voting will be open for a week, unless it's a total blowout and we'll move on to the next round.

  1. I think this contest has been misinterpreted as a 'favourite wrestler' poll rather than Best WWE Champion. While Michaels is better in the ring and arguably the best of all time, Hogan's WWE title reigns carried much more importance. For the same reason, Hart should have gone over Rock.

I'm still perplexed as to how exactly Jeff Hardy and The Ultimate Warrior beat Morales and Graham...

  2. I left it intentionally vague so people could vote how they choose in order to spark debate, but I haven't heard anyone chime in in favor of some of the more perplexing winners. Any Jeff Hardy or Rock fans want to speak up?

  3. Wow, that's a hell of a blowout against Backlund. Poor guy. And If Jericho beats Bruno, something is seriously wrong. No way were Jericho's reigns as Champion better or more important than Bruno. He held the belt for 8 freaking years!

The only thing Jericho has going for him is the Title Unification.

  4. Yeah, I'm breaking up with you, KO readers. It's just not working out. Hogan AND Bret being dropped in this round? I'm sorry. Irreconcilable differences.

  5. I voted for Hogan and The Rock in the last round.

Hogan was the easiest decision for me last round. Hart vs. Rock was one I had to think about for a bit, but Rock might have received the nod for the simple fact that I started watching wrestling in the late 90s and remember more of his reigns than anything Hart had done.

As for the current round, I voted on Sammartino and Undertaker.

  8. If I saw one guy wrestle, and didn't see another guy wrestle because I wasn't born, I voted for the guy I had actually seen. Bruno probably was a far better champion than Jericho, but I can't vote for somebody who I've never seen compete simply because other people say he was great.

  9. Well, you've never seen Babe Ruth play baseball either, but it's safe to say that he was a better player than the vast majority of today's baseball stars. Bruno Sammartino held the WWE Title for eight years, a feat that's never come close to being duplicated and never will be duplicated. Jericho held the WWE Title for what, four months?

  10. I think a more apt analogy is comparing Jericho to Will Ferrell and Sammartino to Harold Lloyd.
