WWE Superstars Thoughts - August 6, 2009

Just a heads up for all you folks without access to WGN America, WWE Superstars is now on Hulu!

Santino Marella vs. Chris Masters starts things off, and wow, the crowd is going nuts for Santino. The match was serviceable and considering the participants, that's all I can really ask for. Nothing against either guy, Masters has shown signs of greatness against particular opponents, but with the silliness that is Santino these days, I didn't expect a whole lot to come out of this one.

William Regal & Paul Burchill vs. Tyler Reks & Yoshi Tatsu was okay; good when the heels were dominating, okay when the new guys were in control. Speaking of the new guys, I'm really enjoying Yoshi Tatsu and the crowd is quickly getting behind him, but Tyler Reks still hasn't done anything to really stand out. I'm beginning to wonder if there is anything that stands out about him, he certainly has the look and he's got the basics down, but what sets him apart from all the other guys on ECW? Thrilled to see Regal & Burchill pick up the win here, this has got to be Burchill's first win in months, right?

Rey Mysterio vs. Mike Knox was a solid main event, Rey definitely brings out the best in Knox, but the big guy still just doesn't do it for me. He definitely has an awesome beard, but I'm still waiting for him to show me something awesome in the ring. Dolph Ziggler was at ringside providing commentary, didn't say much, but got his point across and did a good job hyping tomorrow night's Fatal Four Way to determine who will face Mysterio at SummerSlam. Ziggler vs. Knox vs. Finlay vs. R-Truth should be a solid bout, but I assume Ziggler will win to continue his feud with the Intercontinental Champion. I wonder if all the people who whined about him losing at Night of Champions will be singing a different tune if Ziggy walks out of SummerSlam with the gold? As for the actual match tonight, it was a little slow for my liking, especially for a match featuring Rey Mysterio. Served its purpose though, and the IC Title division is definitely the healthiest it's been in years.

Overall, I have to say this was a misstep for Superstars, which has been on a roll as of late. The opening match didn't really stand out, the main event had a DQ finish, at least Regal & Burchill won, but even the end to that match was a bit anticlimactic. WWE's really raised the bar on how good Superstars can be the last few weeks and I'm certainly enjoying the format, but this week just didn't click for me.
