Smackdown Thoughts - July 10, 2009

I somehow managed to avoid most of the spoilers about this show for two weeks, can't believe it. Can't wait for WWE to get back on their regular schedule, I think these mass-tapings hold the product back.

Jeff Hardy kicks things off and he's wearing an eyepatch... I guess that makes him Jeff HARRRRRRRRDY. Jeff admits he faked an eye injury last week and left his tag team partner to fend for himself, what a coward! How dare he?!

Jeff Hardy vs. Kane is our opening bout and it's actually one of the better Kane matches in recent memory. Still, it's a Kane match so it's nothing you haven't seen before.
CM Punk provides the distraction and Kane picks up the win which will help the Punk/Hardy feud, but will do nothing for Kane. Some friends of mine were talking about how Kane "looks like a monster" again since his return and I feel bad for them since they apparently have selective amnesia. This is the typical Kane push, he comes back and dominates for a couple weeks then goes right back to doing the exact same thing he's done for the last twelve years.

Looks like John Morrison has convinced Teddy Long that he deserves a World Title match after defeating CM Punk a couple weeks ago, awesome. Give Morrison and Punk 20 minutes on PPV and I think we'll have another potential Match of the Year candidate to add to the surprisingly long list. Dolph Ziggler emerges from a closet door in T-Lo's office and Morrison quips about him "coming out of the closet." But really, John? You Bedazzle your abs and you're going to crack gay jokes? Really? Turns out Maria was in that closet with Ziggy, further proving that she has the worst taste in men of all the WWE Divas. Santino Marella and Dolph Ziggler... who's next, Zack Ryder?

Dolph Ziggler vs. John Morrison is up next and these two have a solid, if short, match where Ziggler picks up a surprising victory (thanks to a handful of tights). I'm a bit surprised they had Ziggler win since Morrison's been on such a roll, I don't think he's lost to anyone except Chris Jericho since moving to Smackdown, has he? Well, Morrison appears to already have a World Title match on tap, so losing here doesn't hurt him, but it certainly helps Dolphy Z.

Melina & Eve vs. Michelle McCool & Layla is just another Smackdown Diva tag match, you've seen this every week for several months now. This division is spinning its wheels, but it's not moving forward, get Natalya involved ASAP.

I never need to see Pretty Ricky ever again.

Oh wow, CM Punk's scathing promo on Jeff Hardy was downright harsh and a little uncomfortable. I'm sure people are already complaining that someone who doesn't use drugs is being presented as a heel, but Punk just does the preachy, egotistical straight-edge thing so well, this really is the perfect way to turn him. This is the mark of a great heel, when what he's saying has a point; good vs. evil is such a tired concept, I applaud WWE for giving this feud some shades of gray.

CM Punk vs. The Great Khali wasn't even really a match since Kane interfered rather quickly.
I could really do without the Kane/Khali feud, but at least we got Punk's awesome promo and JR calling Runjin Singh the "Sultan of Sideburns" out of this segment. But what was the point of having Jeff Hardy out there for commentary when he didn't say a word after the match started?

Hart Dynasty vs. Cryme Tyme was decent, but I'm still waiting for
JTG vs. Tyson Kidd one-on-one, I think there's a lot of potential in that match. Also enjoyed CT's "Word UP" segment again this week, they totally need to do a six-man tag with Jesse (aka your boy Jeezy).

Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho okay kids, it's time for a pop quiz. Was this match:
A. Awesome
B. Bodacious
C. Cool w/ a side of beans
D. All of the above

The correct answer is obviously D, but I also would have accepted "totally tubular" as a write-in. Okay, so the pop quiz idea was goofy, but I really don't know what else to write when these two wrestle, they constantly steal the show and make it look easy. One thing, have to give major points to Jericho for busting out a proper Muscle Buster, where the hell did that come from?!

Dolph Ziggler attacking Mysterio after the match makes sense, he's the most obvious contender for the IC Title, but it's a damn shame we won't get to see him as a running buddy for Rated Y2J. That wheelbarrow into a Codebreaker is such an awesome tag finisher, but sadly we won't get to see it for at least a few months. Get well soon, Edge! Smackdown needs you!

Another good show from Smackdown, but with Edge out of action, I'm a bit concerned about where they'll go from here. I'll have more on that on this week's episode of Kick-Out!! Radio, which should be posted shortly.

  1. I'm gonna be selective here because my lunch is sitting right next to me and it smells too good to resist.

I like the Dolph/Maria pairing, I really do. It's cute... I also have a soft spot for Ziggler for some reason. I was confused as to who to cheer for with him and Morrison facing off, but I like the outcome of the cheating.

I knew that whole straightedge thing would come soon enough. It's kind of frustrating actually, I'm straightedge myself but as anyone can tell you, I'm a huge Jeff Hardy fan (sitting here in my Enigma shirt right now actually)and I got attacked (verbally) the other day for saying I'm straightedge, they seem to think that alone means I'm not a Jeff fan...
    Oh well.

Oh yeah, agreed, I never need to see Pretty Ricky again. That was... painful and not in a good way.

Dolph attacking Rey surprised me in the beginning, but only for a few seconds lol until I wrapped my head around it. All in all, I'm looking forward to the next Smackdown!
I'll be relying on you to keep me updated for the next couple of weeks though, my mother and I are on holidays which means unless she goes out, I won't be able to watch wrestling- the cable is upstairs.

    Oh well.
So keep me up to date! lol ;)
