Kick-Out's Smackdown Thoughts - April 24, 2009

Edge's opening promo was the highlight of the night, without question. After a great promo from Cena on Superstars, Edge responded and got across the severity of their feud. Although if this is supposedly the end of their epic battle, I have to wonder how long that will last. Edge and Cena is this generation's Rock vs. Austin, you can try keeping them apart for awhile but it will always be a go-to match.

Matt Hardy & Kane vs. CM Punk & Jeff Hardy was good, but it's also the third time Punk and Kane have been in the ring together this week when they have a PPV match tomorrow. I know Matt and Jeff have been at it a few times this month, but they have the luxury of a gimmick match to keep it feeling fresh and original, I hope CM Punk and Kane have something up their sleeves to make their match interesting at Backlash.

Maryse and Gail Kim had another good outing with each other, a bit of a shame they'll be on separate shows, they have great ring chemistry. Maryse continued her hard-hitting style and won the match with a cringe worthy kick-start DDT.

Big Show vs. Undertaker wasn't as fun as their encounters last fall, but it served its purpose. Surprised they had Big Show win so decisively, I have to wonder if that means really big things for him on Raw. I've been waiting for a Big Show/Triple H feud since Triple H went to Smackdown last year, I think there's a lot of potential there considering how good Show's been since his return. Also, isn't it pretty weird that a guy who dominated both Rey Mysterio and The Undertaker in one week doesn't have a match on the PPV.

MVP vs. Chavo was a decent match, but I don't get the stuff with Dolph Ziggler. So the Draft goes into effect on Monday, but MVP is going to be on Smackdown anyway? I know the roster split is always more of a guideline than a rule, but do we really need MVP to show up on Smackdown to fight freaking Dolph Ziggler? His name is Dolph Ziggler! Yes, I am saying that the guy named Montel Vontavius Porter shouldn't waste his time with the guy who has a funny name.

I have to admit, I fast-forwarded through most of Batista/Shane vs. Priceless, I figure I'm going to see most of this match on Sunday, so why spoil it? That said, the flying Spinebuster at the end of the match was awesome. Cody looked like he flew right into a brick wall... a brick wall that then slammed him onto the mat.

Well... that was not the kind of show I expect going into a PPV. Nothing particularly bad, but not really anything extremely good, and they ruined their chances of a perfect week with having a great match on every show. Hopefully Backlash will make up for it and deliver on all six matches, which all have the potential to be good (even the one with Kane).

  1. lol, I disagree man. I hated last night's show. Didn't even want to write about it. Good review though!
