Kick-Out's ECW Thoughts - April 28, 2009

I'm going to keep this review short and sweet since I have another column I'm working on and there wasn't really a whole lot to talk about from last night's show anyway.

Christian's opening promo was rock solid and then Tommy Dreamer coming out to interrupt and set up the night's main event only made it better. The red-hot NYC crowd chanting "E-C-DUB" made me long for the days of the original ECW, glad to see Tommy getting the respect he deserves.

Finlay vs. Tyson Kidd was exactly the kind of action I like to see on ECW, perfectly acceptable TV wrestling. Kidd looked great out there and Finlay continues to shine in his role of mentor to ECW's new talent. Tyson's doing well in his heel role, but I think 99% of his heat comes from that ridiculous hair, I see that and I just want to hate the guy.

Vladimir Kozlov looked AWESOME. People will probably rag on it for being too gimmicky, but seriously... awesome. Over the top? Absolutely. Badass? Without a doubt. Hopefully they'll change his actual ring attire though because the white trunks have to go. How about Nikolai Volkoff's old trunks with the hammer and sickle? What I'm really hoping for is Ivan Drago's shorts from Rocky IV. Kozlov must break you.

Then WWE has to go and break my heart by putting Gregory Helms in a backstage interviewer role. What's up with that?! ***UPDATE*** According to JR's Blog, Helms is "not 100% physically," so doing this to keep him on TV makes sense. Hope to see Hurricane back in the ring sooner than later, but him getting healthy is obviously priority #1.

Main event was good from what I saw, I was having some DVR issues that required me to fast forward through some of it. Jack Swagger's tackle of Dreamer was absolutely brutal and completely out of nowhere, great timing and camera work on that one. I know Swagger is slated for a rematch at Judgment Day, but I think a triple threat match between these guys could be a lot of fun. Christian vs. Swagger vs. Dreamer, let's make it happen.
